18. the Sulphides of Certain Deep-sea Sediment Samples Collected on Dsdp

The manner of occurrence of sulphides (pyrite and pyrite melnikovite?) in a number of samples from the Philippine Sea is described and their genesis briefly discussed. Polished sections of consolidated material revealed both shards of volcanic glass and pyritized remains of microorganisms (Radiolaria?) in a pyrite matrix with a mosaic texture. The mosaic texture is thought to be due to early sy...

Mesorhizobium sediminum sp. nov., isolated from deep-sea sediment.

A novel Gram-staining-negative, short rod, non-motile, non-spore-forming, aerobic bacterium, designated strain YIM M12096T, was isolated from deep-sea sediment collected from the Indian Ocean. Optimal growth conditions of the strain were observed at 25-30 °C, pH 6.0 and in the presence of 3-5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain YIM M12096T ...

Identification of deep-sea-sediment bacteria which produce tetrodotoxin.

Forty-nine bacterial strains were isolated from deep-sea sediments. Among them, 22 strains were shown by the tissue culture assay method to produce sodium channel blockers. For some strains, high-performance liquid chromatography analysis confirmed that the blocker was tetrodotoxin. Tetrodotoxin-producing bacteria seem to be widespread in marine sediment.

Sediment Bacterial Communities Reflect the History of a Sea Basin

How entire microbial communities are structured across stratified sediments from the historical standpoint is unknown. The Baltic Sea is an ideal research object for historical reconstruction, since it has experienced many fresh- and brackish water periods and is depleted of dissolved oxygen, which increases the sediment's preservation potential. We investigated the bacterial communities, chemi...
